History and the Great Depression

No, when I refer to the Great Depression, I'm not talking about the terrible events during the 1930's and 40's. I'm referring to something a little more recent, this past weekend in fact.

Yeah, yeah cry me I river, I know but what did you watch this weekend? You certainly didn't watch any live NFL games. There was no decent college basketball game on and to top it off, as a Mavs fan, I was crushed but not shocked to see them get crushed against the Celtics, who are the best team in the league.

Saturday night just didn't feel right. The only thing on TV was tennis, bobsled and women's college hoops. Seriously now, how depressing is that? What has this world come to? I kept checking my TV every 10 minutes even though I knew there was nothing on worth watching. I felt like the teenage girl who just got dumped and she keeps checking her phone to see if her now ex-boyfriend called even though she's been holding the phone the entire time.

Maybe this just a sign of things to come. I'll be on a high leading up to and during the big dance and after it's over, I won't get to see another live football game until August. I'm not sure I can handle that. What else is going to bring me sweet relief in hectic times and a busy schedule? NBA, College hoops and eventually baseball will I guess. Yeah, they do bring good times too.

Alright, enough of the whining. This depression of mine isn't nearly as historical as the actual Great Depression. Speaking of historical, this election was very historical but something just as historical if not more is the fact the Cardinals are in the Super Bowl. Yes, we're all aware of this but have you let it sink in yet? Surrounding the Cardinals is the curse of the Pottsville Maroons, which again, is very historical. It goes back to 1925.

If the Steelers beat the Cardinals in the Super Bowl, then Mike Tomlin will have become the youngest coach to ever win it all. They will also have six rings, more than any other team, and yes, that includes a franchise in Big D. If the Cardinals win, Kurt Warner will become the first quarterback to win the Super Bowl with two teams, and 10 years apart. Now that's historical.

Any chance we'll stop hearing about Mark McGwire and Barry Bonds? Man, one thing I hope only becomes a part of history is steroids, but that probably won't happen. Oh well, let's just watch the game and enjoy it for its history.
