College upsets and wrongful predictions

It's a rare thing for a game to live up to its hype. It's even more rare for a game to surpass all that hype. The Red River Shootout did just that Saturday as the no. 5 Texas Longhorns upset the No.1 Oklahoma Sooners in a 45-35 final.

Sam Bradford had 387 passing yards vs the Horns defense whereas Colt McCoy threw for 277 yards but they got the job done with the running game. Chris Ogbonnaya lead the way as he racked up 127 of the team's 161 yards. Oh yeah, that and Jordan Shipley had 11 catches for 112 yards and a touchdown. Oh yeah, that and another touchdown that came on a kick return.

Other upsets came when Arkansas knocked off Auburn 25-22, Mississippi State beat Vanderbilt 17-14 and Florida destroyed LSU 51-21. Yeah, that's embarrassing.

So I wasn't able to call all the upsets other than the Horns knocking off OU. Nor was I able to predict that as I typed this, I would watch the Rays and Sox tied at 8 in the top of the 9th but I will try to predict tomorrows NFL games.

WSH 10/6-10/12

After a week like this last one, I realized not only was it busy for me, but it was a busy week in the world of sports. It was only a matter of time that Al Davis would fall off his rocker and fire Lane kiffin and it happened, but who thought that press conference would be nearly as ridiculous as it was? Chad Johnson was talking smack after being 0-4 and he'll probably continue to do so after being 0-5.

Terrell Owens was whining as well and the Cowboys embarrassed themselves at home against the Redskins then played an ugly game against the Bengals. Thankfully they kept Eight Five out of the end zone. Hey, if the Bengals win their next eight games, 8-5 will actually mean something else to Chad Johnson.

The Colts barely won against the Texans. The Titans are 5-0 with some kid named Kerry and Former Arena league quarterback Kurt Warner is leading the Cardinals.

We've now had a week of MLB playoffs. What happened to the Cubbies? It was supposed to be their year. Can't blame Bartman for this one. They got swept by the Dodgers and the Phillies knocked off the Brewers in four games.

Don't worry Cubs fans. Your team isn't the only the only one in the Windy City to be illuminated in the first round. The White Sox have been knocked out by the Rays. No, they weren't swept and no it hasn't been 100 years but hey, you're not alone. Hey, don't get mad at me for pouring salt on the wound. I was only trying to help.

Yeah so I mentioned at the beginning of the post how it was a busy week in sports. Therefore, it's time for Weekly Sports History:

10/6/1936, '41 and 47: Yankees win world series again and again.
10/7/1940: Bucky Walters of the Reds becomes first pitcher in 14 years to homer in World Series.
10/8/1952 : Yankees beat Dodgers in seven games in 49th World Series. (Yes, again.)
10/8/1988 :Lou Piniella is fired as manager of Yankees for 2nd time. (Poor Lou, didn't he just...never mind. He's a great manager though.)
10/9/1989
: First NFL game coached by a black man as Art Shell's L.A. Raiders beat N.Y. Jets 14-7 on Monday Night Football. (Hey, maybe Al Davis could hire him back again...oh wait, my bad..)
09/10/1997 : New York Rangers are first NHL team to open with four straight ties.
10/10/1868 : First written account of a Canadian football game.
10/10/1926 : St Louis Cards beat Yankees, in seven games to win 23rd World Series. (wow, Yankees lost?)
10/10/1957 : Milwaukee Braves beat Yankees in seven games World Series. (that's ironic.)
10/11/1997 : Dennis Rodman returns from 2nd longest NBA suspension of 11 games.
10/12/1916 : Boston Red Sox beat the Brooklyn Dodgers in five games to win 13th World Series.
10/12/1989 : Herschel Walker is traded from Cowboys to Vikings for 12 players and America's team would continue its winning tradition.
10/12/1991 : Doug Flutie of BC Lions sets CFL passing record of 582 yards despite losing to Edmonton 45-38 in overtime.
10/12/1992 : Wash Redskin Art Monk sets NFL record with 820th reception.
